Child Obesity - CAUSES + PREVENTION.

Child obesity has constantly been in the headlines throughout the past few years, a question everyone is asking 'Will there ever been a end to this problem'?

At this moment in time there really doesn't seem to be an answer, the waistbands of youngsters and teenagers is expanding and there isn't anything to prevent it right now.

Why? well looking at diets of these youngsters lots of JUNK food is available such as fast food for instance is a key issue in this problem because take a good look at portion sizes you find in McDonalds, Burger King, Pizza Hut, Chinese takeaways, they're huge! I mean Large/Extra Large Fries, come on there is approximately almost 2,000 CALORIES in 1 BIG MAC meal, that is the average daily calorie intake for a man in just one meal!

It is diabolical and at this rate parents are going to out live there own children. Recent research has shown 1in 10 SIX year olds are OBESE! Other research has proven 25% boys and 33% girls aged 2-19 years olds are either overweight or obese, the total number of obese children has DOUBLED since 1982.

Other factors leading to this problem are lack of PE in schools, too much TV, too many video games etc, as technology has advanced over the years many new games, playstations, nintendo's etc have been created and most children like what they see in advertisements, as any parent will know.

I guess it is ok to have like a hour playing them, but all the time is wrong, just sitting in the house all day infront of either the computer or television, you are not getting any exercise and if you do it constantly every day you will not burn any calories off so the body will just metabolise and store as FAT.

Looking at PE in schools which has dramtically reduced since 1993, children are not relatively getting much exercise during school time and when it comes to PE some people do not seem to enjoy it anymore, but if schools were to make it more fun, chalenging then maybe there could be a change in the future.

Physical Education should also include learning about the benifits of exercise and good nutrition, teaching about body anatomy etc.
